huh. Watching CNN’s coverage of the devastation left behind by Hurricane Katrina is pretty sobering stuff. Families, homes, communities, lives have been washed away. It is estimated it may take months to clear the water from New Orleans. Mother Nature has been getting pretty nasty in recent years. It makes me wonder why people would take any additional risk by living in *known* earthquake, hurricane, tornado etc. zones. Ya, ya… love your home but seriously…if need be I could think of a half dozen places I would move to in Canada. It is disturbing to think they will rebuild New Orleans and really what is to stop this from happening again? I hope they manage.
The weekend got started quickly as we* left for Niagara shortly after work Friday. It was B.’s birthday weekend and we had plans for dinner at my parents Saturday. We left early so we could do some shopping etc. Saturday morning. And did we. B. got a bunch of clothes, I got two pairs of pants (I must have tried on about twenty pairs… funny how inaccurate the sizes are at Old Navy so I ended up getting pants for American Eagle 😛 ) and of course some popcorn form Kernals. I was pretty zonked by the end of shopping.
I got B. some jewelry (it is my experience that in spite of the thought sometimes this backfires and I had though it did) but B. did like the jewelry it just needed some re-sizing. So… we called the jeweler up (who lives in St.Catharines, near Brock) and were going to make a quick stop in to make some changes to her necklace. Phew, as if. We left three hours later… funny how time flies when you start chatting with interesting people. I was even able to have a nerdgasm while there as the Jeweler’s son is a bit of a geek and built his first computer. Sniff! Sunday B. did some field work with the dog and I did some coding work and took some badly needed downtime. A good weekend.
* we, unless otherwise mentioned is me. B. and Tanga. The puppy goes pretty much everywhere with us now.
Thanks JJ for telling me the links page was spazzing in IE. Does IE ever render a page properly? Sigh. I also updated the photos section. Not much there now, but I’ll add new galleries shortly. Took evil puppy for a run last night in a *top secret* location with another Viszla owner. Run run run play.
The weekend started off on the wrong foot. I got up and started looking for camping gear only to discover all my gear was at my parents. Sigh…! Fortunately B. had a tent here and it ended up being fine to use. The weekend was a lot fun and the weather was mostly decent. We got in some hockey, canoeing, poker, fire!, fire!, BBQ (yummy garlic burgers), tunes and drinkin’ (Rum, Mike’s Hard Berry (yum!), beer, Tequila shots, etc.) *Hangover avoidance tip* : Drink at least one 500ml bottle of water before you go to sleep. Works like magic. JJ rented some massive SUV (gawd! $50 for half a tank of gas) and got *full insurance*.. of course this led to *let’s take the SUV offroad*. The SUV handled quite well until the tire blew out. Nothing like changing a tire at 4 in morning with a nice breeze blowing in off Lake Huron. A typical boyz weekend of camping. Already looking forward to next year.
Spent most of today at home. Cleaning, coding, reading, gaming. In the evening got groceries with the Dot (which is always a fun experience). Back to school tomorrow. Meme time!

and last week’s Chooseday. Would you rather:
be forced to listen to nothing but barry manilow tunes for 36 hours OR metallica?
Even though they are greedy self centered sell outs… Metallica.
french kiss richard simmons OR gene simmons (lead singer of kiss)?
Gene. Gimme the tongue baby. -smirk-
wear a pink tutu everywhere you go for a week OR a big cat-in-the-hat hat?
Cat in the Hat hat.
uncontrollably kick people in the shins when you first meet them OR pinch their hiney?
Hmmm. Neither. 😛
Update: Meme links are dead. Entry date is a guess.
As a web developer you have to deal with clients. Some are great. They offer you a lot of useful feedback and work with you to complete their website. However there are some clients that suck. Clients that change things over and over, have poor direction, tamper with content and are never satisfied with anything you do and then blame you for taking so long. Worst of all, you probably have no clue who you are because there is only you at the centre of your world. :icon_rolleyes:
On an unrelated note… it is the BoyZ camping weekend as of Friday at 2PM! It should be fun – I’m looking forward to some good times. Details to follow.
I was just thinking how great open source is as I sit here listening to streaming audio on XMMS, coding with Quanta, FTPing with gFTP and browsing with Mozilla Firefox. Fedora is great. I still love you Redhat. 🙂
*blink* was that my weekend? B. got home early Saturday evening and was understandably tired… We got up early Sunday and drove to Guelph with Tanga so she could get some field training. (Field training is everything to do with hunting birds…the dogs are trained to track a bird scent, find them in fields (etc.), point to them once they are found and retrieve them once shot.) The dogs are not suppose to kill anything or even injure the birds. I’m not to excited about the shooting — but that is a later stage of training she may or may not receive. The tracking is pretty interesting however. Watching a dog follow a scene and find game is pretty interesting and clearly the dog enjoys doing something it was meant to do.
Ended the evening continuing watching Six Feet Under Season III. We are renting the series from blockbuster. What is Nate going to do!?
Work has been same old same old the past few days. Fortunately my boss is doing some work on my project that will help get it done. It is becoming awfully redundant. I did manage to accomplish something today potentially solving an issue that has been around awhile. The new office is pretty cool. Unfortunately I’m in an office with another co-worker. Nothing against him at all. But there is a larger room with six co-workers in it (included a co-worker from my class) which I would much prefer to be with. I guess it isn’t in the cards. This makes for much more of a boring day… Ah well, beats flipping burgers.
I’m looking forward to B. coming home tomorrow. I certainly find more motivation to leave the house when she is around.
Phew. It is a big drive to get to Round Lake…5hrs… maybe not monstrous by some standards, but certainly was exhausting for me driving alone. It was worth it though. It is such a nice lake, how many lakes in North America can be *tested* to be save to drink? Sandy lake bottom, clear, warm water — very nice.
We did some drinking, swimming, reading, relaxing, shopping, gaming… all good. Certainly didn’t seem long enough however. B. has a lot of family up there, so visiting took up more time than I was expecting. Not a problem, but it took out of *our* time which was disappointing since it is badly needed. Great weather though. Dog was more annoying at Round Lake than at B.’s sister’s cottage…. likely since the cottages at Round Lake as closer together, and puppy likes to wander.
Good to hear the Discovery shuttle landed safely. Anyway, exhausted. It has been a very long day. I miss B. already. (Oh, I didn’t mention she is still there ’til Saturday… she has more ‘weeks’ than I do…)
