Finally! Canada has a DO NOT CALL list. Get on it now! (Apparently it isn’t active for about 30 days…but still… progress) Gawd forbid I’m allowed to eat my dinner in peace.
For shits and giggles I’ve decided to mod my old xbox and put Linux on it. *adjusts pocket protector* Yes. Geeky. The community behind this is extensive. I guess the geeks love socking it to Bill’s first console. There are at least eight or so distros of xbox linux. Heh. Anyway, to get it working required some tinkering under the hood. Fortunately I found a non-soldering method, and after about 20m I had a new BIOS working and was booting into x-DSL! The only issue is getting the display to work properly. It seems to cut off at 800×600.. but I’m working on fixing that. The XBox controller functions as a mouse and there is an on screen keyboard (or you can Mod up a USB keyboard). I’m hoping to turn the xbox into a Media Centre or some such thing. It was just gathering dust anyway. This is kinda fun. *snort*
B. was away most of the afternoon with the dog at a class. So I was left with various chores. First I cleared the driveway of branches, broke them down and cleaning the garage a little. Then made a pot of chili for dinner, took out garbage, vacuumed and did a few loads of laundry. I was pretty zonked after all that. In the evening we went to the cute theater in Bolton to see Burn After Reading. I enjoyed it. I love John Malkovich! Pitt was very funny as well. It was a curious little film.
Sabres came back to beat the Leafs in OT in pre-season play tonight. They were losing 2-0 with 6m to play in third! Hopefully a sign of things to come.
Some time ago a coworker asked me if I wanted to see My Bloody Valentine who were touring again and stopping in Toronto. I had heard of them but wasn’t terribly familiar with them. So I listened to some of their material and it instantly reminded me of Lush (a band I love) and Curve (another band I like) so I figured why not. Well the show was tonight. What a show it was. I’ve been to maybe a hundred or so concerts and I’ve never been handed earplug at the door until tonight. It soon became apparent why.
The crowd was a curious mix of people. Since the band hasn’t released anything since 91 there has been a significant aging of original fans. So there were teens to late forties in the crowd. Overall a pretty docile bunch. The opening band wasn’t too bad. They were instrumental rock/noise with a horn and cello… they had some good moments. It would be interesting to hear their studio material. They were The Flowers of Hell. (Points for a great band name!) The second artist seemed out of place playing a largely acoustic set with some awkward distortion seemingly stuck in at the end of her songs. Her set didn’t fit at all. Maybe the quietness of the guitar only seemed to make the sonic assault from MBV appear to be that much louder.
MBV brought it. Loud. distorted, scratchy, noise with enough melody to keep your sanity. I was able to go with the earplugs for about 5-6 song then it became too much. Clearly a sonic assault was the expectation. The final song was a 20m? single note that drifted on and on and on and on threw waves and waves of distortion and feedback. It became a little much but was still interesting to behold. The songs they did play however were great. Perhaps overly heavy on guitar drowning the vocals but the catchy melodies and musical barrage was still very satisfying.
A fun night out with Raj. I got to meet the girl he is seeing. Amanda was quite nice. She also works in the gaming industry at Silicon Knights in St.Catharines. Raj’s photography buddy Steve (who I met before) also joined us. Anyway… Zzzzzzzzz. Night.
What is that sound? No not the honking, barking, meowing or drone from end of season construction… It is the sound of hockey! Yes boys and girls hockey is back. In fact the NHL Pre-season has already started! It makes me wonder why ‘the Sabres’ Station’ doesn’t talk about the Sabres. Just the 3-0 Bills. Sure it is pre-season and sure the Bills are off to an amazing start… but gawd… some balance please. What about pre-season reports? Team comparisons? Scouting reports? Off-season improvements? Show the Sabres *some* love in between the Bills masturbation.
I love the new Jersey BTW! Old school represent!
I’m really liking Bolton. For a ‘small town’ there is a lot going on here. The town has a massive commercial strip with ‘Big Box’ stores and strip malls, restaurants etc. and still is close for walking trails and parks. The Bolton Fair was on last night. It is the typical amusement rides, candy, lights, noise and Edge Motorsports had a Demolition Derby. I’ve never been to a smash ’em up, I have to say (in spite of the horrible seating) it was pretty fun. Basically take a few cars put them in a concrete encased dirt arena and they smash each other until only one car is running. It is amazing how much abuse cars can take. Regrettably for the final round the fireman who was spraying water on the course to keep the dust down oversprayed and the cars had zero traction. They looked like they were racing in slow motion. Meh. Overall however a nice distraction within walking distance of home.
We top seeded the front yard yesterday. I love the Maple trees, but they do a number on the grass below. They will be thinned out soon hopefully.
Bills go for 3-0 today. Let’s go Bills! Let’s go Bills! Let’s go Bills! B-b-b-b-b-b-BILLS!
Time to move on. I can anyways go back.
It is suppose to be a nice weekend weather wise. I’m hoping to get in a bike ride or hike. The always piling-up chores and wanting some War time are going to make time juggling time this weekend interesting. Not to mention I’m hoping to see Burn Before Reading with B.
There aren’t many nights a big geek feels like it is Christmas, but the first night of a long awaited MMORPG goes live is one of them. I’ve been playing World of Warcraft for a few months. It is fun, but really it seemed to be dragging. Especially since most of the people I play with don’t play anymore. Then along came Warhammer Online after years of development… today it launched at midnight. It seems very similar to WoW, as I expected it would. However it ‘feels’ a lot different. Grittier? More realistic? Less produced? Anyway, I played only a few hours, but it seems like it could be goodbye to WoW. More later, tired.
Incredible trailer link.
The week was moving along in typical fashion until mid day yesterday I developed what I thought was a typical headache. Take a few acetaminophen and a few hours later you are fine. A few hours later I wasn’t fine. So I took some Advil. A few more hours passed… Still not fine. This is not a headache… this is a migraine. The difference seems to be a headache goes away with drugs a migraine does not. The drugs did nothing. I don’t think I’ve had a migraine before – I’m pretty sure I would have remembered. It finally started to fade at around midnight. I also felt nauseatious but nothing would come up. Hmm. What a waste of a night. Curious the behaviour of the pets. The dog brought me her kong and Remi stayed with me and followed me to and from the many trips to the washroom. Thanks cat. Meow.
Another weekend gone. B. and I were looking at getting a new bed. It would seem like a simple task. Lay in a bunch of beds until you find one you like and buy it? And that is what we did. Then we got home and started reading about the bed we bought only to find a tons of angry reviews and complains about the bed deforming after a short time after purchase. Yikes! Further reading determine that the nice soft pillow toppers on most modern beds *could* also have this occur. Maybe it was the vocal minority complaining but still… Any new bed IMHO shouldn’t have issues within the first few years of ownership. So we decided the purchased wasn’t well researched enough and we returned the bed. Now we are leaning towards something with more latex (better for allergies anyway) and we’ll just add our own topper to it. So, no new bed this week. Driving around Vaughan Mills is insane.
We Spent yesterday evening at my Sister’s for B.’s birthday dinner. My brother in law cooked up some super tasty steaks and veggie sides culminating in a great dinner enjoyed by everyone.
The rest of the evening was pretty quiet…
Chatting with friends at work and LOG came up. No not *my* log. 😛 Still makes me laugh…’It’s big, it’s heavy, it’s wood. It’s log, it’s log, it’s better than bad, it’s good!‘
Barb is away in Montreal a few days. So just me and the horde of animals that seem to require constant feeding. Barb ripped some poor phone rep from Rogers a new asshole about ‘home phone’ being down over and over… And wow… they were at the house within 48 hours and claim to have fixed the problem. We’ll see. It was obviously and clearly dysfunctional before. I think something wasn’t done properly. Rogers home phone uses their cable line. (You can see it spliced for phone and Internet) The Internet always worked the phone did not. Hopefully it has been fixed… It is strangely discomforting not to have a phone number you can be reached at.
Great choice McCain! YES WE CAN!
